Igangan killings: Amotekun to the rescue as southwest governors activate joint defence of Yorubaland

– The defense of Yoruba land now lies in the hands of Amotekun operatives across southwest states according to Rotimi Akeredolu

– This was revealed after some gunmen attacked Igangan in Oyo state, with many people killed and several properties destroyed

– According to the Ondo state governor, commanders of the security outfit have been activated to find ways to protect the region

Akure, Ondo state – Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, chairman of South West Governors Forum has directed the South-West Security Network, Amotekun, to commence joint operations in the southwest region immediately.

This follows the attack on Igangan community, Ibarapa north local government area of Oyo state, by suspected herdsmen.

The attack which led to the loss of lives and destruction of property was thoroughly condemned by the governors.

Akeredolu made this know in a message on Facebook. The message read in part:

While we will encourage the security agencies to get to the root of this latest act of provocation, we have directed the Commanders of the South West Security Network, Amotekun, to convoke a joint security meeting of all commanders in the South West with a view to commencing joint operations in the region immediately.”

Recall that Legit.ng had reported that a late night / early morning attack by bandits in Igangan Ibarapa left no fewer than 10 persons dead.

The hoodlums suspected to be herdsmen arrived in large numbers late Saturday night, June 5, and unleashed mayhem in the community.

Although the total number of fatalities has not yet been determined, it was learnt that no fewer than 10 persons lost their lives during the attack. Five residents were reportedly shot dead by the attackers while security operatives who were said to have rushed to the town also killed five of the attackers during the gun battle.

Foreign herdsmen have invaded southwest forests

This attack is coming less than three days after Gen. Kunle Togun (retd), the chairman of the Oyo State Security Network, aka Amotekun, raised an alarm over the invasion of southwest forests by foreign herdsmen.

Speaking on Wednesday, June 2, he advised residents in the six southwest states to be vigilant, noting that the herdsmen might launch attacks on the region.

Togun said the foreign herdsmen believed God has given them Nigeria, especially, the southwest, as their inheritance.

According to him, Amotekun cannot address the crisis alone and urged members of the public to help with credible information.
